Volunteers to defend Hearth and home

At a meeting of the National Volunteers in Magherafelt on Aughust 4, 1914,the following resolution was proposed and passed by those present:

 

We the National Volunteers of Magherafelt and district, Co. Derry assembled

on 4th August desire to express our strong appreciation and cordial approval

of the statesman like pronouncement of our gallant leader Mr John E. Redmond

in the House of Commons on Monday last.

We herby solemnly pledge ourselves if called upon to protect and guard the

sacred shores of Ireland from invasion by any foreign power, and if

necessary to obtain that object we are prepared to join with the Ulster

Volunteers to defend Ireland, the land of our birth and uphold the prestige

and integrity of the British Empire.
