What are the Derry Celebrations?

Each year the Apprentice Boys of Derry celebrate two dates in the city of Londonderry. These celebrations take the form of a parade by the organisation to and from a Church Service held in the historic Saint Columb's, Church of Ireland (Anglican) Cathedral. The organisation has grown to some 10 000 members world wide, who when they converge on Londonderry to take part in the celebrations march to the city centre. This is necessary so that the organisers can maintain discipline and control over the huge crowds. A wreath is laid at the City War Memorial to remember all those who have died over the centuries, including the First and Second World Wars in defending the free world from oppression. New candidates become members of the Association at the Apprentice Boys of Derry World Headquarters, situated inside the ancient City Walls. This is the only place in the world where one can become a member of the Association. The two dates celebrated are the 18th December (New Calendar), the closing of the city gates by thirteen young Apprentices against the enemy forces and 12th August (New Calendar) when the city was relieved after The Memorable Siege, having held out and not surrendered despite about 10 000 of the defenders dying in Her defence.

Why is the siege so important?

The siege of Londonderry in the years 1688-1689, as can be seen by even a cursory study of history played a very important role in securing the victory of the Williamite forces in Britain and indeed parts of Europe at that time. The success of King William III Glorious Revolution in Great Britain effectively stopped the building of a tyrannical empire by Louis XIV of France and his ally, the deposed King of England James II. The theory of the Divine right of Kings was replaced by reforms put in place by King William III and Queen Mary establishing the supremacy of Parliamentary Democracy, and the freedom peoples enjoy today through out the world.

Is the Apprentice Boys Association not a secret organisation working against the Roman Catholic Church?

No, the Apprentice Boys Association is not secret. We have no secret rituals, signs or passwords.

When joining do candidates swear an anti Roman Catholic Oath and agree not to attend Roman Catholic religious services?

No. In fact no oaths of any kind are taken. A new member merely confirms that he is of the Reformed Protestant Faith, that he will support the Throne of these Realms and that he will endeavour to attend the Celebration dates. There are no further obligations. There are no restrictions placed on where a member attends acts of worship. That is a matter for his own conscience. Roman Catholicism, or other religions for that matter are not even mentioned in our literature, nor is it any part of the obligations and conditions of membership.

The war in Ireland was a victory for Protestants over Roman Catholics and celebrating this victory is merely coat trailing. Are the celebrations not rubbing salt into the wounds?

No. A victory for Protestants over Roman Catholics is a very simplistic statement. It is true James II did find considerable support among Roman Catholics in Ireland. However half of his army were French, and of his Irish soldiers some were of the Protestant faith. Similarly the Army of William III was not only Irish Protestants, but included English, Dutch, Scottish, French Huguenots and other European soldiers. It was also by no means a Protestant army. For example the Royal Dutch Blue Guards, some of his best troops were a Roman Catholic Regiment. William III was in fact allied to Pope Innocent XI (Benedict Odescalchi) and his successor, Pope Alexander VIII, both of whom opposed Louis XIV and his allies.
